Bryansk region

Bryansk region

Bryansk region was formed on July 5, 1944 with the center in Bryansk (485,0 thousand inhabitants) founded in 1146.
The distance between Moscow and Bryansk is 379 km.

Geographic location. Bryansk region is situated in the central part of East European plain. It borders: in the south – on the Ukrain, in the west and north-west – on Belorusia, in the north – on Smolensk region, in the north-east – on Orel region, in the south-east – on Kursk region.

Natural conditions. Undulating land of Central Russian and Smolensk Uplands combines with Dnieper lowland. Main rivers are Desna, Navlya, Iput. The climate is moderately continental: January average temperature is -7 degrees centigrade, July average temperature is +18 degrees centigrade; annual precipitation is around 600 mm. Podzolic, sod-podzol and grey forest soils are characteristic for the region; mixed forests prevail (Bryansk woodland).

Population. Bryansk region is populated almost exceptionally by Russians. Negative natural increase and subsiding migration inflow characterize demographic setting. Average life span is higher as compared with neighboring regions.

Economic advantages and disadvantages. After the USSR disintegration and decay of cooperation with the Ukraine and Belorusia economic and geographic position of Bryansk region has radically worsened. Now it’s not a transit, but a peripheral region. Besides its territory more than any other in Russia was exposed to radioactive contamination after Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. Vast spaces of agricultural lands were disabled, аnd people – moved to safer districts. Part of the territory for several decades has become an economic desert. Bryansk region doesn’t have any mineral resources worth speaking about besides non-metallic building materials. The region also suffers from tangible power shortage. Most attractive asset is Bryansk’s powerful industrial complex.

Specialty. Bryansk region is notable for manufacturing and processing agricultural products, building materials production and glasswork.

Main industries: machine-building (diesel engines, diesel locomotives, cars, machine-tools, refrigerator vans, bicycles, road-building machines); metal working; building materials production (asbestos-cement items, cement, glass, fiberglass, insulating materials); phosphoric powder production; light industry (wool, clothing, leather and foot-wear industries), food industry (food-canning, starch, meat), timber and woodworking industry. Bryansk region is a monopolist in Russia in production of refrigerator cars, diesel-locomotive shunters, bitumen pumps and facilities, motor graders and bucket-wheel excavators.
